Cittadinanza onoraria del Comune di San Marcello Piteglio al soldato americano Donald F Todd
Il riconoscimento è stato conferito durante il consiglio comunale di domenica 16 febbraio, alle 21, in collegamento streaming con gli USA. Todd faceva parte dell’85° battaglione della 10ᵃ divisione di montagna K company dell’esercito statunitense, che stazionò a Prunetta durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. In quel periodo Donald strinse un legame profondo e duraturo con il paese e i suoi abitanti. Fotografo esperto, documentò le fasi della guerra oltre alla vita quotidiana di commilitoni e civili.
Nel gennaio 1945 fece il suo ingresso a Prunetta l’85° battaglione della 10ᵃ divisione da montagna dell’esercito statunitense. Del reparto speciale addestrato ai combattimenti in aree montane faceva parte il ventenne Donald F. Todd che, dopo essersi arruolato due anni prima, aveva lasciato il “suo” Michigan per combattere. Da quel momento la vita di Donald – che oggi ha 95 anni e vive a Denver, in Colorado – è stata legata a doppio filo a questa terra, ai suoi paesaggi, ai cuori delle persone che la abitavano. Una connessione che non accenna a sbiadire e, a 75 anni di distanza, porta Todd a ricevere la cittadinanza onoraria del Comune di San Marcello Piteglio, che sarà concessa nel corso del prossimo consiglio comunale, in programma domenica 16 febbraio alle 21, in collegamento streaming con lui negli Stati Uniti.
Le sue foto a documentare la guerra
Fotografo esperto, Donald ha documentato le fasi della guerra oltre alla vita quotidiana di commilitoni e civili. Le testimonianze – fotografiche e non – che Todd realizzò nei mesi che il battaglione trascorse sulle nostre montagne, sono state recentemente riscoperte e consegnate alla memoria collettiva grazie all’impegno della Pro loco di Prunetta e Prataccio e di altre associazioni. Nel luglio 2018 è stata organizzata una grande rievocazione partendo dalla Pasqua del 1945, giornata di festa in cui soldati e abitanti furono immortalati dall’obiettivo di Todd in molteplici occasioni di socialità. Le foto di allora sono state scattate nuovamente, negli stessi luoghi, sostituendo i personaggi originali con figuranti scelti per l’occasione fra i paesani e i membri della Associazione onlus Linea Gotica Pistoiese. Per l’occasione Donald Todd ha inviato alla comunità una lettera attraverso la quale ripercorre quella lontana – ma ancora incredibilmente vivida – esperienza di amore e morte.
Ricordi e commemorazioni a Prunetta
“Per noi Prunetta – scrive Todd nella missiva – rappresentava un luogo di sicurezza, di riposo, di normalità prima e dopo il calvario della battaglia… Il tempo che ho passato con i miei amici nei vostri piccoli paesi di montagna è il ricordo più toccante della guerra”.
“La lettera in questione – commenta il sindaco di San Marcello Piteglio Luca Marmo – è, oltre che un ringraziamento appassionato per la ricucitura di questo frammento di memoria e affetto, uno straordinario monumento alla pace e, insieme, la più perentoria condanna dell’atrocità di tutte le guerre”. Quella lettera è diventata un vero monumento: una stele, infissa nei giardini pubblici di Prunetta, che riproduce l’ultima frase della missiva di Todd: “Grazie per averci ricordato, perché non vi abbiamo mai dimenticato”. Nel giorno dell’inaugurazione, nel luglio 2018, era presente il figlio di Donald, John Todd. A lui Marmo ha consegnato una targa con impressa la stessa frase, in inglese, a sancire la ricucitura speculare dei legami che si erano interrotti nel primo dopoguerra, nel segno dei valori di pacificazione, di amore e riconoscenza reciproca ivi impressi.
I tanti perché di una cittadinanza onoraria
“Il riconoscimento della cittadinanza onoraria a Donald Todd è connotato da una serie di importanti intenti – spiega un comunicato stampa del Comune -: sancire in maniera istituzionale la stabilizzazione di un legame di alto valore storico ed emotivo che riguarda tutta la comunità; riconnettere il filo della memoria rispetto alle storie accadute sul nostro territorio durante gli anni della Seconda guerra mondiale; riconoscere il contributo degli alleati, fondamentale alla realizzazione del processo democratico seguito alla fase della liberazione; gettare le basi per un legame organico con la città di Denver e con lo Stato del Colorado, dove si formarono generazioni di giovani addestrate per il combattimento in montagna che operarono nei nostri luoghi in stretta comunanza con le comunità locali”.

Honorary Citizenship to Donald F. Todd
The award was given during the city council meeting on Sunday, February 16, at 9:00 p.m., in streaming connection with the USA. Todd was part of the 85th battalion of the 10th mountain division K company of the US Army, which was stationed in Prunetta during the Second World War. During that period, Donald formed a deep and lasting bond with the town and its inhabitants. An expert photographer, he documented the phases of the war as well as the daily life of comrades and civilians. In January 1945, the 85th battalion of the 10th mountain division of the US Army entered Prunetta. The special unit trained for combat in mountain areas included twenty-year-old Donald F. Todd who, after enlisting two years earlier, had left “his” Michigan to fight. From that moment on, Donald’s life – who is now 95 years old and lives in Denver, Colorado – has been closely tied to this land, its landscapes, and the hearts of the people who lived there. A connection that shows no signs of fading and, 75 years later, leads Todd to receive honorary citizenship of the Municipality of San Marcello Piteglio, which will be granted during the next city council, scheduled for Sunday, February 16 at 9:00 p.m., in streaming connection with him in the United States.
His photos document the war
An expert photographer, Donald documented the phases of the war as well as the daily life of comrades and civilians. The testimonies – photographic and otherwise – that Todd created in the months that the battalion spent in our mountains, have recently been rediscovered and consigned to the collective memory thanks to the commitment of the Pro loco of Prunetta and Prataccio and other associations. In July 2018, a large re-enactment was organized starting from Easter 1945, a festive day in which soldiers and inhabitants were immortalized by Todd’s lens on many social occasions. The photos from that time were taken again, in the same places, replacing the original characters with extras chosen for the occasion from the villagers and members of the Pistoiese Gothic Line non-profit association. For the occasion, Donald Todd sent the community a letter in which he retraces that distant – but still incredibly vivid – experience of love and death.
Memories and commemorations in Prunetta
“For us, Prunetta – Todd writes in the letter – represented a place of safety, rest, normality before and after the ordeal of the battle… The time I spent with my friends in your small mountain villages is the most touching memory of the war”.
“The letter in question – comments the mayor of San Marcello Piteglio Luca Marmo – is, in addition to a passionate thank you for the mending of this fragment of memory and affection, an extraordinary monument to peace and, at the same time, the most peremptory condemnation of the atrocities of all wars”. That letter has become a true monument: a stele, fixed in the public gardens of Prunetta, which reproduces the last sentence of Todd’s letter: “Thank you for having remembered us, because we have never forgotten you”. On the day of the inauguration, in July 2018, Donald’s son, John Todd, was present. Marmo gave him a plaque with the same sentence printed on it, in English, to sanction the mirror-like mending of the ties that had been interrupted in the first post-war period, in the name of the values of pacification, love and mutual gratitude imprinted therein.
The many reasons for honorary citizenship
“The recognition of honorary citizenship to Donald Todd is characterized by a series of important intentions – explains a press release from the Municipality -: to institutionally sanction the stabilization of a bond of high historical and emotional value that concerns the entire community; to reconnect the thread of memory with respect to the stories that happened in our territory during the years of the Second World War; to recognize the contribution of the allies, fundamental to the realization of the democratic process that followed the liberation phase; to lay the foundations for an organic bond with the city of Denver and with the State of Colorado, where generations of young people trained for mountain combat were formed and who operated in our places in close communion with the local communities”.
